Underscores in the URLs

Best practice in URLs is to use a dash (-) instead of underscores as a word separator.

When Google indexes a URL it considers the dash as a word separator while the underscore (_) has the effect of grouping words. This comes from Google programmers wanting to be able to search for exact programing terms, underscores were therefor used to group terms.

Sites like Wikipedia have a lot of URLs with underscore and this does not stop them from ranking high, but, as Matt Cutts recommended, if you start a new site then you should go for the dash choice in the first place.
